- Go through answers to the “Review of Fundamentals” that was due today
- Practice giving directions:

- Instructor hands out maps (e.g. of Berlin or Köln)
- Students follow directions given by instructor
- Then students work in pairs giving each other directions
- To practice on your own, use the map of Stuttgart in Vorsprung, p. 259, or find a map of e.g. Berlin online; use the expressions on the overhead!
- Preview tonight’s text on “Migrationsgeschichte in Deutschland”
- Goals for this text:
- Primary goal: the text provides crucial background for understanding the very important social issue of migration. It will help contextualize the movie Almanya, which we will watch this semester, and also a scene with a racist neighbor in an upcoming assignment from the Känguru book.
- Secondary goal: because the text exists in both German and English, it’s interesting to compare the versions in order to see what one can learn from that linguistically. We will do a little of that in the remaining class time today.
- For homework, you will read the English text for content, and then spend a short time looking for some things you can learn from the parallel translation.
- Note: the translation is NOT literal – es ist keine wörtliche Übersetzung.
- Some questions about the first paragraph:
- Wie sagt man “migration history” auf Deutsch?
- Was lesen wir in der deutschen Version für “in 2011”? Für “in 2005”?
- Wie sagt man auf Deutsch “80.3” [“eighty point three”]? Wie sagt man “residents”? Wie übersetzt der Text “had 80.3 million residents”?
- Wie sagt man auf Deutsch “in comparison”? Was wäre das Verb, “to compare”?
- Explore the text to find a few more things you can learn from the parallel translation.
- We encourage you to work on tonight’s Assignment in pairs/groups!
