Deutsch 102 Stunde 17
Note: the evening section will cover the vocab worksheet (from Stunde 16) during Stunde 17, and will cover the “Prepositional Verbs” overhead during Stunde 16!
Outline plan:
- 5 Minuten sprechen.
- Overhead: “Was machen wir nach dem Studium mit unserem Leben?”
- Report results afterwards: Jill wird… John, Jenny & Jamie werden…
- Overhead: Prepositional verbs on p. 323:
- Partner*innen: Form (many) sentences with these verbs (quickly)
- This overhead is included on the list of 101/102/103 overheads/handouts for reference. Practice with it a few minutes each day until you’ve gotten a “feel” for these verbs!
- Note: The motion-location distinction only applies to two-way prepositions when they are used in a spatial sense. When they are used metaphorically, i.e. as part of a prepositional verb, you have to memorize which case applies. BUT: for the kinds of verbs we’re likely to use, 9 times out of 10 it will be the Accusative (e.g. whenever “über” means “about” and not “over/above,” it is always followed by the Accusative). The main exception we’ll see in 102 is “Angst haben vor” + Dativ
- We won’t cover “anticipatory da-compunds” in 102, but they’ll undoubtedly come up when you use prepositional verbs. Basically: A preposition can only “govern” a noun or pronoun. If the object of the preposition includes a verb, you need an “anticipatory da-compound.” Examples:
- Looking forward to a movie:
- Ich freue mich auf den Film (object of “auf” is just a noun ==> no need for an anticipatory da-compound)
- BUT Ich freue mich darauf, den Film zu sehen [“I’m looking forward to it [darauf], to see the movie.”]
- Looking forward to the summer:
- Ich freue mich auf den Sommer (object of “auf” is just a noun ==> no need for an anticipatory da-compound)
- BUT Ich freue mich darauf, im Sommer nach Österreich zu fliegen.
- Waiting for a bus:
- Ich warte auf den Bus (object of “auf” is just a noun ==> no need for an anticipatory da-compound)
- BUT Ich warte darauf, dass der Bus kommt.
- Looking forward to a movie:
- Freie Kommunikation: Aktivität 47.
- Perhaps use some of the prepositional verbs!
- 10 minutes free time
- e.g. play the “Back-to-Back” or “Around the World” vocab games described at the end of Stunde 8
