Compare the meanings: I slept vs I would have slept; I went vs I would have gone; I was vs I would have been; I had vs I would have had
Note that whereas in the indicative there is a formal and an informal past tense, in the past subjunctive there is only the one (two-word) form for speaking and writing to say what you would have done

Instructor reads a set of statements about what they did or would have done in Berlin. For each statement, students decide if this is something the instructor did (indicative) or something the instructor would have done (Past Subjunctive)
- Afterwards, instructor shows this overhead with the statements
- Answers: they DID 1, 4, 5 & 8; they WOULD HAVE DONE 2, 3, 6 & 7

Past Subjunctive with modal verbs: double-infinitive construction:
- What does “Ich hätte nicht Französisch sprechen sollen?” mean?
  - [I should not have spoken French]

- When do I use “wäre” instead of “hätte”?
  - [Never for this construction!]
- Note that this is especially easy, since it involves no decisions about using “haben” vs “sein” and does not require you to remember any past participles ==> all you need to do is recognize when you want to use a modal verb in the past, and then use this construction.
- Examples:
  - Ich bin todmüde. Ich wünschte ich hätte gestern mehr schlafen können. [I wish I could have slept more yesterday]
  - Ich habe einen Kater. Ich hätte nicht so viel Becks Bier trinken sollen. [I shouldn’t have drunk so much Beck’s]
  - Ich habe großen Hunger. Ich hätte mehr frühstücken müssen. [I really should have [“hätte…müssen”] eaten more for breakfast”]
    - [vs “Ich hätte mehr frühstücken sollen” (I should have eaten more for breakfast) and “Ich hätte mehr frühstücken können” (I could have eaten more for breakfast)]
