Deutsch 102 Stunde 46
Outline plan:
- Informal activity before class begins:
- EITHER: Practice with one or two of the “Sprechtest 2” index cards
- OR: 5 Minuten sprechen
- Possible topic: Sie haben jetzt alle Kapitel-Videos gesehen. Was ist Ihr Lieblings-T-Shirt aus den Videos?
- Repeat present tense passive conjugation table p. 450
- Instructor says e.g. “Ich werde von meiner Mutter geliebt. Von wem wird Lola geliebt? [Von Manni] Von wem werden die One Direction Kinder geliebt? [Von niemandem].”
- Tell a partner “Ich werde von ___________ geliebt.”
- Aktivität 30
- Was wird hier [im Klassenzimmer] gemacht?
- Impersonal passive
- This is a simple and natural construction in German, but can’t be translated literally into English:
- “Es wird getanzt”: There is dancing going on / People are dancing [literally: “It is being danced”]
- “Hier werden Filme gesehen”: Movies are being watched here / People watch/are watching movies here.
- See p. 454 for more examples
- Aktivität 35
- For the example, “in der Diskothek,” in addition to the model answer given (“In der Diskothek wird getanzt”), you could also say “Es wird getanzt” or “Hier wird getanzt”
- Instructor asks questions like “Es/Hier wird getanzt” or “Es/Hier werden Filme gesehen” etc. and asks where “hier” could be
- This is a simple and natural construction in German, but can’t be translated literally into English:
- Past tense of Passive voice:
- Remember that in order to form the passive in different tenses, you just need to use the different tenses of “werden,” which you already know – or else should now urgently review!
- Repeat narrative and conversational past forms in the charts pp. 451 & 452
- Note in the summary table on p. 452 how in all tenses of the passive, the past participle of the verb (“angerufen” in this case) must always be used!
- Who called? (i.e. in the “angerufen” charts on pp. 451-2): the point is that we don’t know, and that one of the main uses of the passive is to describe what happened when we don’t know or don’t want to say who did it.
- Overhead: Zeittafel UofM/Ann Arbor
- [German 231 examines the concept of identity; for German 232, you will choose a course topic that interests you]
- Note that “in” is omitted when stating the year something happened: Die Universität Michigan wurde in 1817 gegründet
- Overhead: Was passiert(e) in Berlin
