Aufsatz 1 Notes:

  • Choose Thema 1A OR Thema 1B OR Thema 2 [Thema = topic]
  • Leaf through the book to look for ideas: you can be very creative with the language we’ve learned so far! [Do this when you prepare your test essays, too!] Try to avoid saying things you haven’t learned the German for yet.
    • ==> Just use the present tense!
  • Do NOT write your essay in English and then translate it into German: this is very hard work, and produces very poor results!
  • ***Note the specific “Ideen” listed below the topics. These apply to all three possible topics!***

THEMA 1A

Beschreiben Sie eine gute Freundin[female friend] ODER einen guten Freund[male friend].

  • Beginnen Sie mit “Eine gute Freundin von mir heißt _____” [Use the pronoun “sie” in your essay] ODER “Ein guter Freund von mir heißt _____” [Use the pronoun “er” in your essay]
  • [eine gute Freundin von mir/ein guter Freund von mir = a good friend of mine]
  • Pronouns: If sie and er are incorrect translations for your friend’s preferred gender pronoun, please consult with your instructor about possible alternatives!

THEMA 1B

Beschreiben Sie eine(n) imaginäre(n) “besten Freund/beste Freundin für immer [=forever]” [i.e. an “imaginary BFF”].

  • Beginnen Sie mit “Mein imaginärer bester Freund für immer heißt _____” [Use the pronoun “er” in your essay] ODER “Meine imaginäre beste Freundin für immer heißt _____” [Use the pronoun “sie” in your essay]
  • Pronouns: If you would like to use a non-binary gender for this “imaginary BFF,” please consult with your instructor about possible alternatives!

THEMA 2

Aliens have infiltrated the University of Michigan. They look like human beings, but a few things about them are not quite right, or at least unusual. Describe one of them.

Beginnen Sie mit “Er sieht wie ein Mensch aus [=He looks like a human being], aber er ist ein Außerirdischer.” ODER “Sie sieht wie ein Mensch aus, aber sie ist eine Außerirdische.”

  • Pronouns: If you would prefer to use a pronoun other than sie or er, please consult with your instructor about possible alternatives!

IDEEN FÜR THEMA 1A, 1B ODER 2:

  • Wie sieht er/sie aus? (Haare, Augen, groß/klein…)
  • Was sind seine/ihre persönlichen Eigenschaften (musikalisch, fleißig, intelligent…)?
  • Was macht er/sie gern?
  • Was kann/muss/will/soll/darf/möchte er/sie tun?
