Warum ist das relevant?
- This song teaches you a lot of really useful basic German expressions, and there’s a cute dog.
- The pronunciation is not perfect, but a good model. Note that there’s at least one recurring typo (which is corrected by the dog in a speech bubble): the correct spelling is “Auf Wiedersehen.”

- This song will actually be more relevant in Kapitel 4, but here you can already recognize a number of pronouns (ich, du) and forms of the verb “sein” (bin, bist, ist)

“I’ve been looking for Freedom”–David Hasselhoff
Warum ist das relevant?
- David Hasselhoff sang this song by the Brandenburg Gate on New Year’s Eve 1989, shortly after the Berlin Wall fell. At that time he was at the height of his popularity in Germany.

- In 2006, Dirk Nowitzki joked that he sings the song before free throws.

Edeka Commercial: “Supergeil”
Warum ist das relevant?
- Practice the conjugation of the verb “sein”: Es ist supergeil, supergeil […] Denn du bist supergeil
- Preview some days of the week: Sonntag = Sunday; Montag = Monday
- This commercial for the German supermarket [Supermarkt] chain “Edeka,” whose marketing campaigns had previously been solidly conventional, became an instant viral hit around the world in 2013.
- The song also gives you a bit of a sense of the influence of English on contemporary German.

- The word “geil” originally meant “horny,” but is almost universally used nowadays as a “cool” way to say that something is “cool” or “awesome” ==> supergeil = “super-cool“; similarly “sehr, sehr geil” = “very, very cool.”

- This video was made by high school students at the Schillergymnasium in Münster, Germany, for beginning students of German. The students spontaneously interviewed people in the pedestrian zone, saying “Hi” in various ways and asking them how they’re doing.

- Graf Zahl [Count Number] loves to count [zählen] letters [Briefe], so he writes lots of them to himself and gets very excited when they arrive, because now he can count them.

Warum ist das relevant?
- You get to hear the numbers 1 – 8 and the expressions “Gute Nacht” and “Was ist los?” [=What’s going on?] (with a slight Italian accent) over and over again, to the tune of a very silly early 90s techno song. The lyrics, based on a children’s rhyme, are below.
- Warning: the video is visually very sexist, in a dated and hopefully intentionally ironic sort of way. We’ve kept the link here, together with this warning, as the German is so clear and useful. Please let us know if you think we should remove it.

Warum ist das relevant?
- Das Alphabet! This song (from 1999) makes fun of the profusion of abbreviations in everyday discourse ==> consists mostly of a long list of abbreviations ==> great alphabet practice.
Vokabeln/Info
- Many/most of these abbreviations are common, but even Germans would not recognize all of them. Some of them are intentionally juxtaposed to suggest contrasts, ironies etc. Look up a few for fun!
- Mfg = Mit freundlichen Grüßen = “With friendly greetings.” This phrase is the standard ending for a formal letter. Especially in emails, it is often abbreviated “Mfg.”
- Nun, da sich der Vorhang der Nacht von der Bühne hebt kann das Spiel beginnen das uns vom Drama einer Klinikkultur berichtet = Now that the curtain of night rises from the stage, the play can begin, which tells us of the drama of a culture [Ironic intro about the importance of all of these abbreviations]
- ihr könnt mich mal = “You can go ahead and…” [Common abbreviated insult; the complete form [“Du kannst / Ihr könnt mich mal am Arsch lecken”] entered German high culture via an early play by Goethe, and is sometimes referenced as “quoting Goethe”]
