The Lernen to Talk Show
A student who went to Germany for a year in 2011/12 created a series of 6-7 minute videos once a week to document his progress in the language, each of them carefully subtitled (and often also annotated) in ways that actually also show you some of the mistakes he makes as he speaks. Watching these carefully could be both instructive and inspiring, and is also great listening practice.

Britney Spears parody by the popular a capella group Wise Guys, known for their witty lyrics. In this case, they’ve translated the song very literally into German, including intentionally retaining English syntax in some places where this results in amusingly bad German. Bruce Springsteen: Historic Concert and Short German Speech in East Berlin 1988
- 160,000 tickets were sold; fans broke through barriers and more than 300,000 attended and e.g. sang the Chorus of “Born in the USA” behind the Wall, and waved homemade U.S. flags.
- It has been argued that this huge event, the biggest concert in East Germany’s 40-year history, and in particular a short speech Springsteen read in German, helped to contribute to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
- Click on “Show More” in the video info to see the text of the speech in German and English, and some brief context. Springsteen doesn’t speak German; he practiced the speech with the German driver who took him to the show.
