German Lessons: Unit 3 – The verb “denken”
Warum ist das relevant?
- This video was made by high school students at the Schillergymnasium in Münster, Germany, for beginning students of German. The students spontaneously interviewed people in the pedestrian zone, asking them what they’re thinking, and eliciting various serious and/or playful responses.
- Note that sometimes denken is followed sometimes simply by a statement of what the person is thinking, sometimes by “dass,” and sometimes [hence the relevance to this chapter] by the prepositions “an” [==> I’m thinking of…] or “über” [==> I’m thinking about…] or the anticipatory da-compounds “daran” or “darüber”
- The video includes German and English subtitles.

Warum ist das relevant?
- Admittedly, the only reason is that the title includes the word “erklären” [=to explain] from the Kapitel 7 vocab. But it’s a fun video that was a YouTube hit in Germany, and it may give you some ideas for your next visit to the dance floor 🙂
