The German-American Business Council (GABC) is having an informal Round-Table at Mothfire Brewing in Ann Arbor this Thursday from 6-8:30pm. They write that this is “a great way for interested students to get active in the German-American business community in Michigan,” and that the event is “available for all students. We speak both English and German, [and] there are opportunities to network with German-American businesses.” Please register for free at https://gabcmi.org/meetinginfo.php?id=27&ts=1728177494.

Registration is still open for the 2024 LRC Translate-A-Thon, taking place this Friday and Saturday, 10/18& 10/19/24. Click the link for more info, and to register. The keynote speaker will discuss the benefits and pitfalls of AI for translation. For the marathon, students at all levels are invited to stop in for however long they have time, to help work on translation projects in many languages, and enjoy snacks and companionship with other translation enthusiasts, Friday 5-10 pm and Saturday 9 am-10 pm. There are at least two projects involving German. There is also a very interesting English > English “translation” project – please tell your friends! Here is the info from the LRC:

Translation is not just between two languages! Taking a broader view of translation, the Language Resource Center, in collaboration with Justice in Deed, is offering a transcribing project during our Translate-a-thon where English is the only language you need to know. The process of transcription is a vital part of translation, and students can begin to develop their translation skills by participating in this transcription process. Justice in Deed staff will be on site Friday evening to get volunteers started.

Justice In Deed is a collaborative project dedicated to exposing and responding to the fact that the deeds to thousands of homes in Washtenaw County contain “racially restrictive covenants” – or provisions prohibiting Black people and other minorities from living there. As a group of researchers, students, residents, and community activists, they are working to: educate the community about the role these covenants and other racist housing policies played in causing segregation and economic inequality, repeal the covenants, and encourage the adoption of policies to repair the damage caused by systemic housing discrimination in Washtenaw County.

Finding German Films and Series

Chrome Extension for Dual-Language Subtitles

A German 101 student has found a Google Chrome extension that allows for subtitles in two languages, and has found this very helpful for watching e.g. “Dark” in German for his AMDs. I have not had time to try this, but if you find the dual language subtitles in the “Easy German” videos helpful, then this may be worth checking out. The extension is called Language Reactor.
