Vocabulary overviews [searchable Word docs!]

To practice the vocabulary for each chapter, go to the German 101 Quizlet folder (Kapitel 1-6) or the German 102 Quizlet folder (Kapitel 7-11). You can also preview the German 231 vocabulary here.

Suggested procedure:

  • Work on one chapter at a time; rotate through earlier chapters regularly
  • Spend 10-15 minutes at a time going through the cards. For each card, try to form a very simple sentence with the word as quickly as you can, and say it out loud
    • Your sentences can be as simple as “[Noun] ist groß/klein/abstrakt; Ich mag [Noun] (nicht); Ich [Verb] (nicht) gern; Ich bin (nicht) [Adjective/Adverb]
    • Absurd/surreal sentences can be fun & effective. Keep them simple & picture them!
    • Can’t think of a sentence right away? Just say the word out loud and move on.
    • Here are some ideas for forming simple sentences quickly.

The mobile app versions of our Univ. of Michigan Flashcard Program use spaced repetition, which is MUCH more effective than just rotating through cards. Unfortunately, the program’s “back end” is built on Flash ==> we are phasing it out and moving to Quizlet for now. For German 101/102, the vocabulary database for the Umich flashcard program is based on the 2nd edition of Vorsprung. The overlap with the current 4th edition vocabulary is about 80% ==> using the Umich program will still be very useful, but not perfect.
